Cured-in-place lining works by pulling or inverting a resin-saturated felt tube into the existing pipe and curing it in place, usually with hot water, steam, or UV light, until it hardens into a new pipe within the old one. It needs the host pipe to still hold roughly its original shape and alignment, which makes it a strong option for a line with root intrusion, minor cracking or interior corrosion but no significant sag or collapse. Pipe bursting takes a different path for a line that is too damaged for lining but still on a workable grade — a bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward into the surrounding soil while a new pipe, usually a heat-fused HDPE line, is pulled in immediately behind it. Bursting can also upsize the diameter of the line in the same pull, which lining cannot do.
Both methods need only small entry and exit pits rather than a trench along the whole run, which is the entire appeal where a driveway, mature landscaping or a finished patio sits over the line. Both also share the same real limitation: they replace the pipe on essentially the same path the old one took, so neither one corrects a belly caused by soil settlement or a line that was laid without proper fall to begin with. A camera inspection is what tells you which category your line is in before a lining or bursting quote is worth trusting, and where the problem is grade rather than pipe condition, trenchless work is not the honest recommendation.
